Re:   Export Control License Requirements for Travel to Restricted Foreign Countries

This memo serves as an annual reminder to the campus community that the U.S. government imposes significant restrictions on travel to Cuba, Iran, North Korea, Syria, or Ukraine (Crimea, Luhansk and Donetsk regions). Travel to these destinations for University business must be reviewed by the Export Control Office prior to booking your trip. With very few exceptions, UCSB will not be able to reimburse related travel expenses if your trip was not coordinated with the Export Control Office.

The U.S. Office of Foreign Assets Control requires a license for all business-related travel, including conference attendance, to Cuba, Iran, North Korea, Syria, or Ukraine (Crimea, Luhansk and Donetsk regions). The licensing requirements surrounding travel to these countries/regions are long standing. There are extremely restrictive sanctions programs imposed by the U.S. government on these countries/regions. Individuals must work with the Export Control Officer if the need arises to conduct business-related travel to one of these countries/regions contact exportcontrol@research.ucsb.edu. Please note that specific licenses can take upwards of 6 to 12 months to obtain. Contact the Export Control Officer as early as possible.

Do not hesitate to reach out if you have any questions about the sanctions programs administered by the OFAC. For specifics on a particular sanctions program, please visit: Front page | U.S. Department of the Treasury .
