Compliance and Training Requirements for UC Santa Barbara

Advancing the University of California's mission of teaching, research, and public service requires a shared commitment to upholding the highest standards of ethical, legal, and professional behavior. To ensure a safe and ethical work environment and to comply with state and University of California mandates, all University employees are required to complete several training programs.

In January 2025, we communicated that completion of the Cybersecurity Awareness training would be required by March 21, 2025, to maintain access to campus network tools and services. At that time, we additionally announced that the completion of all other training programs mandated by law and UC policy would subsequently be required to maintain access to the campus network. More recently, federal funding agencies announced that beginning October 1, they will require Research Security Training status be current prior to the submission of funding applications. In order to ensure the smooth and successful completion of these remaining mandatory compliance and training activities, a phased set of deadlines were developed after broad consultation.

Anyone who has not completed required training activities by the designated completion deadlines below will lose access to key web-based UCSB tools (e.g., email, Zoom, Canvas). Faculty, staff, and student employees who are already in compliance and up-to-date in their required trainings do not need to repeat trainings until they are due for renewal.

The deadlines for the remaining mandatory training for faculty, staff, and student employees are:

  • Wednesday, October 1, 2025:

    • Ethics and Compliance Briefing for Researchers (40-60 minutes)
      – required for anyone seeking or being supported by extramural funds

  • Wednesday, October 22, 2025:

    • Abusive Conduct (20 minutes)

    • General Compliance Briefing (30 minutes)

    • Workplace Violence Prevention (20 minutes)

  • Wednesday November 19, 2025:

    • UC Sexual Violence and Harassment, Anti-Discrimination, Prevention and Education (SHAPE) Training for Supervisors, MSP, and Faculty (2 hours) or

    • UC Sexual Violence and Harassment, Anti-Discrimination, Prevention and Education (SHAPE) Training for Non-Supervisors (1 hour)

Multiple notifications and reminders will precede loss of access. Non-compliant users will be redirected to the UC Learning Center to complete the training in order to restore access. We strongly recommend that you complete any remaining training this summer.

Completion rates for required trainings are regularly reviewed by the UC Office of the President and the UC Regents, with the campus held accountable for any lack of compliance. We are very pleased to report that compliance with the cybersecurity training was achieved. These training programs are an essential part of ensuring that our faculty, staff, and student employees understand their responsibilities. They are also vital for maintaining a safe and supportive environment for our entire campus community.

Thank you for your cooperation and for your ongoing dedication to UC Santa Barbara.
