RE: Call for Applications: Climate Innovation Proof of Concept Grants
Call for Applications:
CLIMATE INNOVATION PROOF OF CONCEPT (POC) GRANTS
Applications Due: May 20, 2024
CNSI is now accepting applications for the 2024 Climate Innovation Proof of Concept (POC) Grants to support the development and deployment of innovations and technology that promote climate resilience by reducing vulnerability and/or supporting climate adaptation at the local, state, and national levels. These programs are designed to support both the development and uptake of innovations through traditional commercialization mechanisms such as startup companies, industry partnerships, or intellectual property out-licenses, as well as innovation deployment under an “open access” model.
Applications are due by Monday, May 20, for a project start date of July 1, 2024. All projects and activities under a successful grant must be fully completed by February 28, 2025.
Eligibility: Climate Innovation Proof of Concept Grants are open to: (a) UCSB-affiliated, California-based startup companies; and, (b) UCSB faculty and researchers who are eligible to serve as Principal Investigators.
The program offers two types of grants to support the development of innovations that foster climate resilience:
User Discovery Grants. These grants support up to $10,000 of customer/user discovery and market validation activities to help gain a deeper understanding of issues such as (a) the critical features/interfaces the innovation needs to incorporate to assure maximum uptake, efficacy, and accessibility; (b) potential resource limitations that may affect adoption; and, (c) how key stakeholders may that influence the decision to adopt or purchase the innovation. Funding can be used to attend trade shows or specialized workshops (note: funds cannot be used to support travel to academic conferences) or to support meetings (including travel) with representatives of potential customers/uses of the innovation, consulting experts in the relevant market(s), or state, regional or governmental agencies to understand the policy, regulatory or rebate/incentive landscape.
Proof of Concept Grants. These grants provide up to $50,000 for targeted, translational, or applied research projects designed to obtain key metrics or data or to develop working prototypes, that demonstrate the potential value, feasibility, efficacy, and impact of the target innovation. The funding is flexible and can be used to cover salaries, materials, supplies, field testing, prototyping, test-bedding, or third-party CRO or foundry work.
Please direct any questions to Sherylle Mills Englander, Executive Director for Strategic Initiatives & Operations at CNSI (englander@ucsb.edu).

Subject: Reminder: Warm Up Weekend Campus Parking and Events
Friday, April 5 through Sunday, April 7, 2024
Campus officials have worked diligently to develop a parking plan to help ensure the safety of our campus community of students, faculty, staff, and others who are authorized to use campus facilities during the “Warm Up” weekend. Additional measures will be put in place to discourage unauthorized use of campus parking facilities to gain access to Isla Vista during the weekend.
Effective Friday, April 5 through Sunday, April 7, the campus will be closed to overnight visitor parking. Campus checkpoints will be set up beginning at 5:00 p.m. on Friday, April 5, and will continue as needed throughout the weekend to provide safety and security to the campus. Unauthorized vehicles will be denied access without prior approval.
In order to park on campus overnight on the dates identified above, all vehicles must be registered with valid “Reserved”, ”A”, “B”, “C”,“H”, or an Annual “Night & Weekend” ePermit.
Short-term ePermit, including Daily, 15-Day Night & Weekend, and Visitor permits issued from the TPS Permit Portal, Permit Dispensers, and ParkMobile will expire at Midnight, Friday, April 5, and Saturday, April 6. These permits are not valid for overnight parking. Unauthorized vehicles parked overnight on campus are subject to a $300 citation and having the vehicle impounded at the owner’s expense. The enhanced parking restrictions will cease between the hours of 7:30 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. to allow for normal business on campus.
As in previous years, a number of our campus parking locations are subject to closure, and access will be limited to support enhanced safety and security measures.
In addition to parking lot closures, traffic in and around the campus will be impacted. Access to El Colegio Road and/or Isla Vista may be closed for safety reasons if deemed necessary by law enforcement. If roads are closed, proof of residency may be required to enter. Certain roads in Isla Vista may be barricaded and closed to vehicular traffic.
Departments with special parking needs during these dates should contact Chris Zbinden, TPS Guest Services/Enforcement Manager, via email at chris.zbinden@ucsb.edu, as early in advance as possible. This will allow us to better plan the logistics of parking to meet your needs and help you avoid any difficulties with parking.
We will be making every effort to ensure the safety and security of our community on “Warm Up” weekend. This is a top priority for our campus.

Re: Update: Campus Beach Closures – Friday, April 5 through Sunday, April 7, 2024
We have been informed by the County of Santa Barbara that the campus beaches will be closed Friday, April 5 through Sunday, April 7.
Due to the potential for a “Floatopia” (now known as “Deltopia”) type event to occur, the campus beaches will be closed Friday, April 5 through Sunday, April 7, 2024 and will not be accessible to the public or campus community. The beach closures are in response to unsafe and unsanitary conditions that have been associated with this unplanned and unsanctioned event in the past.
In addition to the beach closures, there will be temporary campus parking lot closures and additional parking restrictions beginning Friday, April 5 through Sunday, April 7. Please see Transportation and Parking Services (TPS) signs posted in the various parking lots for further information or visit their website at http://www.tps.ucsb.edu .
The “Floatopia” event in 2009 failed to provide for the appropriate health, safety, or well-being provisions necessary for a large-scale public event, to include sanitation or refuse collections. Because of safety and health concerns, unauthorized individuals are prohibited to be on the beaches and TPS will be enforcing the parking restrictions.
For your information, attached is Santa Barbara County’s updated press release announcing closure of Isla Vista beaches on Friday, April 5 through Sunday, April 7, 2024.
