Re: Update: Campus Beach Closures – Friday, April 5 through Sunday, April 7, 2024
We have been informed by the County of Santa Barbara that the campus beaches will be closed Friday, April 5 through Sunday, April 7.
Due to the potential for a “Floatopia” (now known as “Deltopia”) type event to occur, the campus beaches will be closed Friday, April 5 through Sunday, April 7, 2024 and will not be accessible to the public or campus community. The beach closures are in response to unsafe and unsanitary conditions that have been associated with this unplanned and unsanctioned event in the past.
In addition to the beach closures, there will be temporary campus parking lot closures and additional parking restrictions beginning Friday, April 5 through Sunday, April 7. Please see Transportation and Parking Services (TPS) signs posted in the various parking lots for further information or visit their website at http://www.tps.ucsb.edu .
The “Floatopia” event in 2009 failed to provide for the appropriate health, safety, or well-being provisions necessary for a large-scale public event, to include sanitation or refuse collections. Because of safety and health concerns, unauthorized individuals are prohibited to be on the beaches and TPS will be enforcing the parking restrictions.
For your information, attached is Santa Barbara County’s updated press release announcing closure of Isla Vista beaches on Friday, April 5 through Sunday, April 7, 2024.
