Due to the distributed nature of accounts at UCSB account management can be confusing. This page will hopefully provide some answers to your questions. Please click on the Table of Contents below to go to a specific answer.

Note

Extension and International Students taking Summer 2024 classes: Due to delays this year on paperwork processing ECI/CoE will not be informed of your class status until 2 weeks before the start of Summer quarter. Extension and International students may receive warning messages about their CoE account expiring in 30 days, 2 weeks, etc.. Please note that if you are already enrolled in Summer or Fall classes as of the end of 2nd pass for continuing students on June 21st, you should see no break in access and that your CoE account should automatically be extended before the start of Summer quarter on June 24th.

UCSBnetID, Connect, and CoE accounts are three separate account systems, CoE account changes will not affect your access to the international and extension student portals.

For those enrolling in CoE classes 3rd pass or later, please be advised expiration is not deletion. Your accounts will be reactivated and extended as soon as we receive updated files from the main campus. Please check your CoE account expiration date at https://accounts.engr.ucsb.edu/maintain/login before contacting us, especially if you are replying to week old emails as extension scripts will be run multiple times the first week of the quarter.

  • UCSBnetID - Based on UCSB campus wide Identity. Used to sign into SSO portals.

  • Google Connect - Email and Google apps like Google drive.

    • Your default email is your UCSBnetID@ucsb.edu. Almost all other accounts at UCSB use the same Google account for email and give you additional email aliases, which you can see under settings (gear icon) >> see all settings >> accounts.

    • Defaults to campus SSO, but can be signed into using a variety of methods.

  • College Level Accounts - The College of Engineering, like the other 3 Colleges that make up UCSB has their own account system. They are not mutually exclusive and people can have accounts from multiple colleges.

    • CoE accounts grant you access to CoE resources such as the CSIL/Honea labs, CoE software, and CoE email aliases such as UCSBnetID@engineering.ucsb.edu and UCSBnetID@dept.ucsb.edu.

    • Coe Account invites are sent to everyone who is taking CoE class or research units if they do not already have a CoE account.

    • CoE accounts are not created automatically.

    • Already existing CoE accounts are reactivated and extended even if they are expired.

    • To see your current CoE information including expiration date, please login to: https://accounts.engr.ucsb.edu/maintain/login

  • Service accounts - These are accounts that provide you access to a particular service such as the UCSB Library or Adobe Federated ID for those whose departments have purchased Adobe Licenses through the Campus office of Software Licensing. Many accounts use SSO as a default, but can use their own logins if SSO is not available.

  • UCSBnetID - rolling expiration date based on enrollment or employment or other affiliation with UCSB.

  • College of Engineering (CoE) - 30 days (1 month) after UCSBnetID expires assuming you are actively enrolled in CoE class or research units. For faculty, employees, researchers and affiliates, when your contract is renewed, your CoE expiration date can be manually set to be 7 days after the end of said contract, same date as Google Connect expiration. Please note that when you renew your UCSBnetID, such as getting a contract extension, we are not automatically informed unless you ask us to be informed. We can manually set expiration dates, but please note that UCSB policy is that all accounts have to have expiration dates. Accounts cannot be extended 'indefinitely' or "to graduation". Please see https://ucsb-engr.atlassian.net/wiki/spaces/EPK/pages/575373570/Account+Extension?src=search

  • Umail - not all students have umail accounts since they are provided by the College of Letters and Sciences. Umail expiration date is 13 months after UCSBnetID expiration as they do not provide any form of manual extension or alumni forwarding.

  • Google Connect - For Students: expires when the last alias is removed or 13 months after UCSBnetID expiration, whichever comes first. If you only have a CoE account it will have the same expiration date as your CoE account. If you have a umail alias, Connect generally will expire a full year after CoE expiration when your umail expires. For Staff, Faculty, Researchers and Affiliates UCSB ETS/ITS has stated as of April 2024 they will start expiring Connect accounts 7 days after UCSBnetID expiration regardless of alias status. Meaning if you want to have email after leaving UCSB or your latest position, you need to contact your home department to either extend your UCSBnetID or set up a 0% (unpaid) appointment or be converted to a UCSB affiliate. Please note as of January 2024 affiliate status can only be extended 1 year at a time. Please also note that ONLY YOUR HOME DEPARTMENT has the ability to alter UCSBnetIDS. Everyone has a home department. even if you are an even 5 way split between 5 different departments, one of those departments will be listed in Identity as your home department.
