What is git, GitHub.com, and GitHub Enterprise?

Git

Git is a distributed revision control system used by collaborators to share and contribute files in repositories (repos) with advanced features like full version tracking and history.

GitHub

Github.com is a public web-based hosting service that offers free accounts and paid plans for private repos.

GitHub Enterprise

GitHub Enterprise is similar to GitHub’s public service but is privately hosted and offers free private repositories.

github.ucsb.edu

University of California, Santa Barbara, College of Engineering’s (COE) github.ucsb.edu ran a copy of GitHub Enterrprise for many years.

Our license for GitHub is now expired and Enterprise Technology Services (ETS/ITS) is running a different version.  Please see https://github.com/ucsb/github-guide
