Unable to set Send As on Gmail for @cs.ucsb.edu

Problem

You are trying to use your personal GMail to associate a Send As for your @cs.ucsb.edu email.

When you do, it says your username or password is incorrect.

However, when you set it for your @ucsb.edu email address, it works fine.

Cause

GMail may be considering it to be an unsecure method of access for sending.

Solution

At this time, the only known recommendation is to turn off 2-Step Authentication on your UCSB Connect Account.

To turn off 2-Step Authentication, you will need to do the following.
  1. Log onto your UCSB Connect Account through the UCSB Connect Webmail App
  2. Go to the upper right hand corner where you see the colored circle and click on it.
  3. Click on the My Account button to get the Google Account Page.
  4. Under Sign-in & security section, click on Signing in to Google
  5. Click on 2-Step Verification
  6. Confirm your password
  7. At the top, click on the Turn Off button.

Now if you don't want to turn off the 2-Step Authentication, you can try setting an App Password.

To create an App Password, do the following:

  5. Click on App passwords
  6. Confirm your password
  7. Click on the pulldown Select app and select Other.
  8. Put in a name to recognize what password this is for (ie: Personal GMail)
  9. Click on Generate button at the bottom right hand corner.
  10. Copy the password it gives in a window, save this password in a safe spot as you cannot refer to this password once this window closes.
  11. On your personal GMail account, setup as indicated in General Mail Settings instructions, but use the password you just made.
  12. You should get an email on your UCSB Connect Email with a confirmation code to authorize the request as well as a link you will need to confirm you want to allow the action.

This should now allow you to do your Send As.
